Texas A&M-San Antonio opens countdown art exhibition at Educational & Cultural Arts Center

SAN ANTONIO —Texas A&K University-San Antonio invited the public to celebrate a milestone cultural achievement: the opening of its countdown art exhibition at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center, located in the middle of theZona Cultural on Fri, May 9, 2014. The exhibition, entitledContemporary Latino Art: El Corazón de San Antonio will exist open up to the public through Baronial 31, 2014 and showcases 79 local artists who are central to the on-going art narrative of our city.

Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, president of Texas A&Thousand-San Antonio hosted the opening reception, welcoming City Councilman for District one, Diego Bernal, and Felix Padrón, managing director of the San Antonio Department of Culture and Creative Evolution.

"Opening the commencement exhibition at our downtown heart is a landmark occasion for A&K-San Antonio equally it adds some other dimension to how nosotros offer access to education, and what could exist more important than connecting pedagogy with the art and culture of San Antonio," said Dr. Ferrier. "Texas A&Grand-San Antonio is proud to offering this educational experience to the urban center and to all who visit San Antonio."

This landmark exhibition is the starting time step in A&M-San Antonio'southward delivery to share the story of the Latino experience in America and South Texas and surveys the wealth of talent in San Antonio's Latin@ arts community with over 100 pieces of art, centering on the people, places, and things closest to the centre.

"This is such an exciting moment for downtown San Antonio, especially because of the collaboration betwixt the Urban center of San Antonio, Texas A&Chiliad Academy-San Antonio, and so many local artists. It is truly a reflection of San Antonio's delivery to our cultural heritage," said Padron.

During the exhibition, the ECAC will offer educational lectures and workshops every calendar month and provide interactive activities in society to more fully engage visitors on a more intimate level with the art.

The University is committed that hereafter programming will continue the accent that the centre had every bit the former Museo Alameda, the first formal Smithsonian chapter, telling the story of the Latino experience, but too intends for the ECAC to facilitate the understanding and appreciation through visitor-centered exhibitions and meaningful educational programming for a variety of audiences.

Earlier this leap, the A&M-SA Educational & Cultural Arts Heart launched its own fully bilingual website to engage the Latino arts customs and invite local artists to submit their piece of work for an opportunity to participate in this and future exhibitions. With the launch of the website, the curatorial team aimed to constitute a wider process of collaboration between local arts organizations and institutions of higher teaching.

Contemporary Latino Fine art: El Corazón de San Antonio was curated using the Supported Interpretation (SI) model for company-centered exhibitions created by Dr. Pat Villeneuve. The members of the team who curated this exhibition were the post-obit:

      • Oscar Palacios – Contained Preparator/Installation Specialist. Exhibition Technician, The University of Texas at San Antonio.
      • Alex Rubio – Artist/Muralist. Artist-in-Residence with the Mosaic Project, Blue Star Gimmicky Art Museum
      • Rosario Torres Raines, Ph.D. – Professor of Sociology and ECAC University Liaison, Texas A&M University-San Antonio
      • Kathy Vargas – Artist/Photographer and Professor of Art, Academy of the Incarnate Word
      • Alicia Viera – Managing director of Cultural Programs, Texas A&M University-San Antonio's Educational & Cultural Arts Center
      • Pat Villeneuve, Ph.D. – Creator of the Supported Interpretation (SI) curatorial model. Professor and Manager of Arts Administration, Florida Country University.

The curatorial team reviewed almost 700 works of art, some of which will be considered for future exhibitions. All artists in this opening exhibition are local to San Antonio, offering urban center natives and visitors alike a glimpse into the centre of Latin@ heritage through the universal linguistic communication of art.
